Pillar a Alguien - CATCH/CATCHUP/GET/HIT

Se puede usar varias expresiones en inglés para hablar sobre pillar a alguien/algo, ser pillado, etc. Por ejemplo:

TO CATCH SOMEONE/SOMETHING.

TO CATCH SOMEONE/SOMETHING OUT.

TO CATCH UP WITH SOMEONE/SOMETHING.

TO GET SOMEONE/SOMETHING.

TO GET CAUGHT BY/WITH SOMEONE/SOMETHING

TO GET SOMEONE/SOMETHING CAUGHT.

TO BE CAUGHT BY/WITH SOMEONE/SOMETHING.

TO BE HIT/RUN OVER BY SOMEONE/SOMETHING.

TO CATCH SOMEONE/SOMETHING:

Esta es la expresión más común que se usa para hablar sobre pillar a alguien/algo con el sentido de coger/atrapar a alguien/algo. Por ejemplo:

La policía lo pilló.	The police caught him.
El perro pilló la pelota en el aire.	The dog caught the ball in the air.
Me pillé el dedo con la puerta.	I caught my finger in the door.
¡Como te pille, te voy a castigar!	If I catch you, I`m going to punish you!
Le han pillado después de perseguirle un rato.	They caught him after pursuing him for a while.
Lo pillé fumando.	I caught him smoking.
Nunca lo puedo pillar en casa.	I can never catch him at home.
Sabia que voy a pillar un resfriado.	I knew that I'm going to catch a cold.
Tengo que pillar el autobús pronto si quiero llegar en tiempo.	I have to catch the bus early if I want to arrive on time.
Me pilla de sorpresa.	It catches me by surprise. It catches me off guard.
No me pilla de sorpresa.	It doesn't catch me by surprise.
Lo pillaron en el acto.	They caught him in the act.

TO CATCH SOMEONE/SOMETHING OUT:

Se usa esta expresión cuando se habla de descubrir a alguien haciendo algo a escondidas, pillarle de sorpresa, etc. Por ejemplo:

Lo pillé fumando.	I caught him out smoking.
La he pillado por sorpresa.	I had caught her out (by surprise).
Si mientes, te pillarán.	If you lie, they will catch you out.
Que no te pillan en el aeropuerto por llevar cosas que no se permiten abordo.	Be careful not to be caught out at the airport carrying things that are not permitted aboard.

Sin embargo, es más común usar CATCH en lugar de CATCH OUT.

TO CATCH UP WITH SOMEONE/SOMETHING:

Se usa esta frase cuando se habla de pillar a alguien/algo con el sentido de alcanzar a alguien/algo. Por ejemplo:

Los otros corredores lo pilló a los 50 metros.	The other runners caught up with him at the 50 meter mark.
Quizás lo pilles si te das prisa.	You might catch up with him if you hurry.
Salí corriendo y la pillé a medio camino.	I left rushing and caught up with her half way.
Caminaba tan rápido que se me hacía imposible pillar la.	She walked so fast that it made it impossible to catch up with her.
Tenia que caminar más despacio para que me pilla.	I had to walk slower so that he could catch up with me.
Lo he pillado antes de llegar a la puerta.	I caught up with him before he got to the door.
Al final lo pilló la verdad.	The truth finally caught up with him.
La justicia la pillará algún día.	Justice will catch up with her someday.

TO GET SOMEONE/SOMETHING.

Se puede usar esta expresión como sustituta de la expresión TO CATCH SOMEONE/SOMETHING. Es decir, se puede sustituir el verbo CATCH con el verbo GET. Por ejemplo:

Me has pillado.	You got me. You caught me.
La policía lo pilló.	The police got him. The police caught him.
Tenia que salir pronto para pillar el autobús.	I had to leave early to get the bus. I had to leave early to catch the bus.

Sin embargo, hay que tomar en cuenta que no se puede sustituir CATCH con GET en todos los casos. Por ejemplo:

Píllame un asiento al lado tuyo.

Get me a seat next to you. Catch me a seat next to you. (Incorrecto - No se usa CATCH en este caso)

También, en la mayoría de los casos, la expresión TO CATCH UP WITH SOMEONE/SOMETHING se puede sustituir con la frase TO GET SOMEONE/SOMETHING. Por ejemplo:

Los otros corredores lo pilló a los 50 metros.	The other runners got him at the 50 meter mark. The other runners caught up with him at the 50 meter mark.
Quizás lo pilles si te das prisa.	You might get him if you hurry. You might catch up with him if you hurry.
Salí corriendo y la pillé a medio camino.	I left rushing and got her half way. I left rushing and caught up with her half way.
Caminaba tan rápido que se me hacía imposible pillar la.	She walked so fast that it made it impossible to get her.

TO GET CAUGHT/TO GET SOMETHING CAUGHT

También, se puede traducir el verbo PILLAR a una de estas dos expresiones, que combinan los dos verbos GET  y CAUGHT. Por ejemplo:

Me pillé el dedo con la puerta.	I got my finger caught in the door.
La policía lo pilló.	He got caught by the police.
Lo pilló por la noche.	He got caught at night.
Le pilló un resfriado.	He got caught by a cold.
La pilló la tormenta.	She got caught in the storm.
Algo te pillará si no tengas cuidado.	You will get caught by something if you are not careful.
Lo pillaron en el acto.	He got caught in the act.
La pillaron con Alex.	She got caught with Alex.

TO BE CAUGHT

A veces se usa esta expresión en lugar de TO CATCH . Por  ejemplo:

Te pillarán si no detienes el exceso de velocidad.	You will be caught if you don't stop speeding. They will catch you if you don't stop speeding.
La policía te pillará.	You are going to be caught by the police. The police will catch you.
Lo pillaron con los bienes robados.	He was caught with the stolen goods. They caught him with the stolen goods.
Un día te pillarán en el acto.	One day, you will be caught in the act. One day, they will catch you in the act.

TO BE HIT/RUN OVER BY SOMETHING.

Se usa esta frase cuando se habla de ser atropellado o golpeado por algo. Por ejemplo:

La pilló un coche.	She got hit/run over by a car.
La piedra lo pilló en la cabeza.	The stone hit him on the head.

EXCEPCIONES:

Me pilla demasiado lejos.	it's too far for me.
Me pilla muy cerca.	It's very close. It's quite near.
Me pilla de camino.	It's on my way.
